The National Marine Electronics Association developed this standard in 1983 as an interface specification for digital data transfer among marine navigation instruments. NMEA-0183 standard defines - the electrical signal requirement, - data transmission protocol, - data transmission timing, and - specific message formats for a 4800 baud serial data interface. NMEA-0183 devices employ an asynchronous serial interface wile the following parameters. Baud rate: 4800bps Data bits: 8 (d7=0) Parity: None Stop bits: One Devices are designated as either talkers or listeners with some devices being both. A talker is any device that send data to other NMEA-0183 devices. A listeners is any devices that receives data from other NMEA-0183 devices. Instruments that are both talker and listener will have separate connection for each function. All data either transmitted or received interpreted as 8 bit ASCII.
